NORTH SENTINEL ISLAND:Everything you need to know
It has been about 200,000 years since human evolved on the surface of Earth. From that time, humans have developed and explored earth. But still we haven’t explored the entire Earth. Our Earth is full of mysteries. We still have to explore and discover lot more things. But today we are going to talk about an island. A mysterious island! This island is known as Sentinel island. Actually ,this is properly known as North Sentinel island. It is one of the Andaman islands(a group of islands in bay of Bengal) which also includes South Sentinel island. It is home to Sentinelese. These people have rejected to make any communication with outside world. Their population is estimated at between 50-400 individuals. This island is about 59.67 km² large.
As I told you above the people who inhibits on this island are called Sentinelese . They are designated as Scheduled tribes. They belongs to the broader classes of Andaman islands. Moreover they are the world’s last uncontacted people. They are the only tribes which refused to make any outside connection. The people of this tribe are hostile to outsiders, they even have killed those who tried approach their island or landed on it.
In 1956, Indian government has declared it as a reserved tribe. Moreover,an express prohibition has been imposed against anyone travelling within 3 miles of the island.
Life of Sentinelse
Sentilenese are hunter-gatherers. They use their bows and arrows to hunt down animals. They even use many other rudimentary methods to catch sea-animals. It is believed that they haven’t evolved after Stone age. They does not even know about fire. Metalworking and agriculture are still unknown to them.
Death of two fisherman
On 27 January 2006, two Indian fishermen were illegally trying to harvest crabs off North Sentinel island. Due to anchor failure in night, they drifted towards the shore of the island. That time a group of Sentinelese attacked the boat and killed fishermen with axes. According to one report, there bodies were later put on bamboos facing towards sea, like scarecrows.
When Indian rescue team tried to retrieve bodies from that island with the help of helicopter, people on that island once again started attacking them with everything they had. Only one body was found, other was never retrieved.
